Second Life, 10 Alberi per 10 Totem d’Autore
The Totem designed by Studiopepe is characterized by its apotropaic function of protection and connection with nature. The geometric figures, each with a different texture, represent the four elements and remind the viewer of the four foundational pillars of the natural environment. The Totem is titled Come affrontare una tempesta / How to face a storm.
The project curated by Nicoletta Gatti, born in the aftermath of the violent storm that hit Milan on July 25, 2023, shines a spotlight on the relationship between individuals, the city, and nature. The desire to give the fallen trees a second life, conveying their background of beauty and memory, represents the common thread of this collaborative effort.

The trunks, put up for auction by the Municipality of Milan, are reborn through the creativity of ten contemporary designers, including Studiopepe. The project “Second Life: 10 Alberi per 10 Totem d’Autore,” conceived by Nicoletta Gatti, after its preview at Milano Design Week 24 in Piazza San Fedele, is making its way to the temple of designer art in Milan, where these unique pieces will be auctioned off. The proceeds, minus the actual expenses of the entire operation, will be entirely donated to the community for re-greening efforts. On September 11, at the ADI Design Museum, an auction will be held by Christie’s in support of the Milan Fund for Trees, established by the Municipality of Milan to restore the city’s greenery following the July 2023 storm.
